History Channel is back at it again with another Oak Island spin-off show. This time, it’s Tales From Oak Island, and the first episode, “The Article,” looks to examine the 1965 Reader’s Digest story that single-handedly revived modern interest in the Money Pit. We all know the legend: a mysterious pit, whispers of buried treasure, and a centuries-long quest that has yielded more frustration than fortune. But hey, who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt, especially one supposedly cursed?
“The Article” is likely a smart starting point. That Reader’s Digest piece reached millions, planting the seed of Oak Island obsession in generations of would-be treasure hunters. The show will probably dust off some old theories, introduce the major players, and remind us of the many, many dead ends encountered over the years.
Beyond the initial Reader’s Digest frenzy, Tales From Oak Island is expected to unearth other intriguing lore, including those enduring theories about who might have stashed treasure there. Was it the Knights Templar? Pirates? Some random Spaniard with a chest full of silver? The series should cover the usual suspects. And let’s not forget the supposed curse.
The series also sets out to examine various theories and key discoveries in the island’s convoluted history. We’re likely to see some dramatic reenactments and lots of speculation about the potential riches hidden beneath the surface. Templar gold? Pirate booty? A lost Shakespearean manuscript? It’s anyone’s guess. And don’t forget those dangers! Because what’s a treasure hunt without a little peril?
What I don’t want to see is just a rehash of material that has already been featured on the parent show ad infinitum, we get enough of that already on each weekly episode.
Tales From Oak Island premieres Tuesday, November 19 at 10:00 PM on History.
