MTV’s “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” is back, and as seasoned viewers might predict, it’s a mixed bag of milestones and mayhem. The premiere finds the moms facing the usual parenting rollercoaster, but with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure.

First up, in a moment that’s sure to raise a few eyebrows (and maybe even a glimmer of hope for dysfunctional co-parenting everywhere), Maci and Ryan find themselves on the same page for once. They’re putting aside their differences (at least temporarily) to celebrate son Bentley’s sweet 16. And what better way to mark the occasion than with the ultimate symbol of teenage freedom: a car. Jointly purchased, of course. Let’s just hope the shared responsibility doesn’t lead to another round of drama down the road.

Meanwhile, Leah’s twins are embarking on the rite of passage known as high school. This naturally comes with the usual teenage demands for more independence, because, well teenagers are going to do what they are going to do. How Leah handles this remains to be seen, but if past seasons are any indication, it won’t be without its share of struggles.

And then there’s Ashley, who finds herself in a rather uncomfortable position, having to testify against Bar. While the specifics of the situation are unclear, it’s safe to say it’s not a position anyone wants to be in. However, she does find support from an unexpected source, adding another wrinkle to the ever-evolving interpersonal web of the “Teen Mom” universe.

It’s a relatable mess, even if most viewers haven’t experienced parenthood under the constant glare of reality TV cameras.

“Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” airs Thursdays at 8/7c on MTV.
