In this unique TV interview, airing on Friday 5 April on BBC One, a cast of 35 neurodivergent, autistic, or learning-disabled interviewers will question award-winning actor and director Michael Sheen. With no subject off-limits, the interview promises an extraordinary, unpredictable, and profound experience.
The Assembly sees Michael Sheen face a diverse range of questions, from his thoughts on ex-girlfriends and on-screen kisses to more personal topics, such as the OBE he gave back and his daughter’s birth. The interviewers also probe Sheen’s views on the British royal family, his favourite motorway, and what makes him cry.
This special episode, airing during Autism Acceptance Week, is based on the French show Les Rencontres du Papotin, which featured interviews with French President Emmanuel Macron and actor Camille Cottin. The format breaks away from the traditional celebrity interview, replacing flattery with mischievous prodding, left-field quizzing, and profound exchanges.
Michael Sheen, known for his roles in Good Omens, The Twilight Saga, and Masters of Sex, was intrigued by the concept: “I said yes… because it was just such an extraordinary and interesting idea… a very revealing way to approach the tried and tested interview process.” He added, “I think being able to be involved in a project like this could maybe break down some of those barriers [around people with any kind of difference].”
Sheen, who has a deep, resonant voice often sought after by film producers and directors, is no stranger to playing real-life figures, including David Frost and Tony Blair. Born and raised in Wales, he chose to pursue acting instead of a potential career in football, attending the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Sheen’s decision paid off, leading to a prolific career on stage and screen.
The Assembly offers a fresh and exciting dynamic, challenging the norms of the celebrity interview and providing a platform for neurodivergent and autistic individuals to take centre stage.
The Assembly airs on BBC One at 10:40 PM, Friday 5 April 2024.
