“The Bad Guardian,” New Lifetime Thriller with Melissa Joan Hart

Lifetime has announced the production of a new film titled The Bad Guardian (working title), which aims to shed light on the controversial guardianship system. Inspired by real-life stories, this riveting thriller explores the question of whether court-appointed caretakers are truly helpful or harmful.

The film follows Leigh, portrayed by Melissa Joan Hart, as she fights to save her father, Jason (played by Eric Pierpoint), from a corrupt and greedy court-appointed guardian named Janet, played by La La Anthony. When Leigh’s father suffers a fall while she’s away, the courts assign Janet as his guardian. Initially appearing helpful, Janet quickly takes advantage of her position of power.

She places Jason in a nursing home and auctions off his house and possessions under the guise of needing funds for his care. As Leigh challenges Janet’s actions, the guardian goes to great lengths to prevent the family from visiting Jason.

Under Janet’s care, Jason’s health deteriorates to the point where he requires life-saving treatment that is deemed too expensive by Janet. As those who try to expose the truth meet untimely ends, Leigh must gather her strength to take down both Janet and the corrupt system supporting her.

The film brings attention to an alarming reality: “More than some 2 million Americans are currently living under a guardian or conservatorship… It’s estimated that state courts confiscate over $50 billion from their wards every single year.” These shocking statistics emphasize the urgent need for federal laws regulating the guardianship/conservatorship system.

Stay tuned for the premiere later this year, as Lifetime continues to tackle important issues through its powerful storytelling.
