The Chronicles Of Belfast

The Chronicles of Belfast is the fifth instalment in the Chronicles series, and it is narrated by Armagh actor Colin Morgan. It premieres on BBC Northern Ireland on Monday 30 January and comes on the heels of last year’s The Chronicles of Strangford. Through the perspective of the people who live and work in Belfast’s increasingly diverse city, the documentary explores the city’s wilder side and tracks the changing of the seasons.

In the first episode, conservationist Aaron is out on Black Mountain early in the morning when he hears a cuckoo for the first time, a sure indicator that spring has arrived. While harpist Eileen describes finding solace in the allotments’ natural space and calm, Tofik, who fled Ethiopia five years ago, is currently residing in Belfast while he appeals for refugee status and wants to make it home soon.

In each episode, we meet Wiehong as she gets her Chinese dancing class ready for the Belfast Mela. After her spouse passed away three years ago from cancer, Wiehong turned to teaching traditional dance to help her cope with her loss. Artist Wee Nuls tries to brighten up the streets of downtown Belfast with his paintings. Amidst the bustle of the city’s annual Pride event, she shows her support for the city’s LGBTQ+ citizens.

After the summer season ends at the RSPB NI nature reserve in Belfast harbour, warden Maureen gets ready for the arrival of Konik ponies, which will remain on the reserve all winter to graze the undergrowth. Shoppers at Victoria Square attentively observe beekeeper David as he prepares colonies of native black bees for the winter.

There is a lot going on in the city’s more untamed neighbourhoods as winter approaches, despite the difficulties posed by the cold and damp weather. As a result of the increased precipitation, fossils are washed down from the hills and Alannah and Paul of Colin Glen investigate the river for evidence of life dating back more than 180 million years.

The Chronicles Of Belfast is made by Waddell Media and starts on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday 30 January, 8pm. The full series will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
