The Last Tourist Now Streaming on Prime Video
The award-winning documentary The Last Tourist is now streaming in Australia on Prime Video. It examines the devastating effects of mass tourism on the natural world, native populations, and economies. The film visits 16 countries and shows how these effects are compounded by the rapid growth in tourism.
Given the rapid resumption of international travel in the wake of the recent global pandemic, now seems like a good time to consider what we learned from the hiatus in mass tourism and how it may be resumed in a more responsible and conscientious fashion.
More than 400 hours of footage were shot for The Last Tourist, which examines the history of contemporary tourism and reveals its implications. The film equips viewers with the knowledge and inspiration to make a positive effect and to fundamentally transform the way they travel. The documentary delves into disturbing topics like the use of animals in entertainment, the commercial exploitation of orphans, and the strain on developing economies by foreign hotel chains.
Viewers will also encounter local heroes who use tourism to protect historic sites, maintain wildlife populations, and boost local economies during the film’s course of events.
Executive produced by Bruce Poon Tip, the founder of community tourism pioneer and adventure operator, G Adventures, and directed and written by Tyson Sadler, the documentary features leading travel and tourism visionaries including Dr. Jane Goodall (Jane Goodall Institute, United Nations Messenger of Peace), Lek Chailert (Save Elephant Foundation), Gary Knell (National Geographic), Meenu Vadera (Sakha Cabs For Women) and Melissa Matlow (World Animal Protection).
