The Little Mermaid Live-Action Reimagining Premieres on Disney+ September 6

The live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” which debuted in theatres in May and earned over $542 million worldwide, will make its Disney+ debut on September 6, 2023. The original animated version won an Academy Award(R) for Best Animated Feature in 1989.

Exclusive features

Disney+ members will have access to exclusive extras like “Impossible Child,” performed by Oscar(R) winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) as King Triton to music by multiple Oscar(R) winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”) and lyrics by three-time Tony Award(R) winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”).

“The Little Mermaid” tells the tale of Ariel, a young mermaid with a big heart and a yearning for adventure. Ariel, the youngest and most independent of King Triton’s daughters, visits the surface and falls in love with the handsome Prince Eric. Despite the fact that mermaids aren’t supposed to talk to humans, Ariel has to do what she thinks is right. A chance at land life is the price she pays for making a deal with the sea witch Ursula, who threatens both her and her father’s right to the throne.

Who is in the cast

The film stars singer and actress Halle Bailey (“grown-ish“) as Ariel; Jonah Hauer-King (“A Dog’s Way Home”) as Eric; Tony Award(R) winner Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton”) as the voice of Sebastian; Awkwafina (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) as the voice of Scuttle; Jacob Tremblay (“Room”) as the voice of Flounder; Noma Dumezweni (“Mary Poppins Returns”) as The Queen; Art Malik (“Homeland”) as Sir Grimsby; with Oscar(R) winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Being the Ricardos”) as King Triton; and two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “Bridesmaids”) as Ursula. “The Little Mermaid” is directed by Oscar(R) nominee Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Mary Poppins Returns”) with a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee (“Life of Pi,” “Finding Neverland”). The songs feature music from multiple Academy Award(R) winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”) and lyrics by Howard Ashman, and new lyrics by three-time Tony Award(R) winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,’ “In the Heights”).
