The Lost Scrolls of Pompeii: New Revelation (Channel 5, Sunday 12 May 2024)

Channel 5

Channel 5 presents an interesting documentary, The Lost Scrolls of Pompeii: New Revelation, taking us on a journey into the fascinating world of ancient scrolls discovered in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD not only buried the town of Pompeii but also its neighboring city, Herculaneum, preserving it and its treasures for centuries.

In 1752, excavations in Herculaneum led to a remarkable discovery: a villa containing approximately 2,000 papyrus scrolls, carbonized by the intense heat of the volcano. These scrolls, found in what became known as the Villa of the Papyri, represent the only intact library from the classical world, offering a unique glimpse into the past. However, due to their fragile state, the majority of these scrolls have remained unopened for nearly 2,000 years, leaving their contents a mystery.
