On Wednesday, 4 September 2024, at 8:00 pm, BBC One airs an episode of The Repair Shop, Lilian Russell from Newry, Northern Ireland, presents the first item, a harp, to new experts Alex and Nigel Tree. This harp holds a unique story: it was handcrafted by Lilian’s father, Jimmy, a novice, who, inspired by his daughter’s desire for a harp, used a library book to guide him through the intricate process of building one. Despite being a complete amateur, Jimmy’s workmanship is astonishing, and he went on to become a luthier, crafting instruments for people worldwide. Unfortunately, the harp was damaged during a house move, and Lilian seeks to have it restored to its former glory so she can hear it played once again.
Lifelong friends Mac Greenwood and Pete Hemmings bring a unique and delicate item—a “returning birthday card” shaped like an airline sick bag. This card holds a special tradition for the friends, who have been exchanging it for years, even after Pete moved to Australia. The card takes on added significance following Pete’s car accident, helping him fill in memory gaps. Paper conservator Angelina Bakalarou faces the challenge of preserving the card while ensuring it can continue its journey between friends for years to come.
Sisters Fiona and Kirsten bring in their father’s potter’s wheel, a treasured family heirloom. Their father, Syd Walker, was a celebrated potter and artist in Scotland during the 60s and 70s, with his work exhibited internationally. Dominic Chinea, the resident expert, is entrusted with restoring the wheel, which holds not only practical value but also symbolizes their father’s artistic passion. Kirsten hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps and create pottery using the restored wheel.
The final guest, Maria from Dublin, brings an item of historical significance—her mother’s retirement clock. This clock symbolizes the challenges faced by women in the Irish workplace during the 1960s due to the marriage bar. Maria’s mother had to give up her job upon marriage, and the clock became a cherished reminder of her career and independence. Horologist Steve Fletcher is determined to repair the clock, despite discovering worn bearings and extensive repair needs.
