The BBC and Sister Productions have announced a two-part special of the hit legal drama The Split, created and written by the multi-award-winning Abi Morgan. The special will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year, following the success of the show’s three seasons.
The Split special takes place two years after the events of the final season, where viewers last saw Hannah and Nathan navigating a “good divorce.” Now, the Defoe family gathers for a beautiful wedding in the vineyards of Catalonia, Spain. Across a sun-soaked weekend, the special will explore breakups, reunions, and the romantic chaos that weddings often bring.
At the heart of the story is Hannah Defoe (Nicola Walker), a formidable family lawyer in her early 50s. Hannah, compelled to confront the ghosts of her past, must open herself up to the possibility of new love. The special will delve into Hannah’s struggle to find courage and take a leap into an uncertain future.
The two-part special will see the return of a stellar cast, including Stephen Mangan, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay, Ian McElhinney, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Elizabeth Roberts, and Alex Guersman. Toby Stephens joins the cast as Archie Moore, a fellow lawyer.
Abi Morgan, the creator and writer of The Split, has expressed her excitement about exploring the themes of “brutal breakups and tantalising make-ups” within the context of a destination wedding. The special is directed by Giulia Gandini and produced by Jennie Fava. Executive producers include Jane Featherstone, Lucy Dyke, and Abi Morgan.
The Split has been a global success, with BBC Studios distributing the series internationally. It has aired in nearly 120 territories, and local format adaptations have been created in Italy and Turkey. The show’s exploration of modern relationships, divorce, and family dynamics has resonated with audiences worldwide.
