Channel 4

The nation’s favourite vet, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, returns to our screens for the season 19 premiere of ‘The Supervet: Noel Fitzpatrick’ on Channel 4, airing Thursday, 13 June. This opening episode shines a spotlight on the exceptional work of Professor Noel Fitzpatrick and his dedicated team at Fitzpatrick Referrals, a veterinary practice that has become a beacon of hope for families seeking advanced care for their beloved animal companions.

Kicking off with a rescue special, the episode revisits the heartwarming and inspiring stories of animals that have undergone life-saving treatments under Noel’s expert care since the series began in 2014. Among these stories is that of Bran, a three-legged German Shepherd with a challenging past.

Bran’s early life was marred by abuse, ultimately leading to the amputation of one of his hind legs. His remaining hind leg was also affected by severe hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip joint becomes dislocated. Noel proposes an innovative solution: a custom total hip replacement specifically designed for a three-legged dog.

However, this treatment option sparks ethical debates, with some veterinarians questioning its appropriateness. As Bran’s life hangs in the balance, Noel initiates an ethics review to address these concerns and justify the potential risks and benefits of the procedure.

The episode also catches up with Wobble, a rescue whippet who first met Noel in 2015. At just one year old, Wobble was suffering from a compression fracture in her neck, likely caused by some form of impact. This fracture was causing pain and affecting the transmission of signals between Wobble’s brain and her limbs. Her foster mum, Diana, who rescued Wobble from a life of hardship on the streets, anxiously awaits the outcome of complex surgery aimed at restoring Wobble’s quality of life.

Devoted veterinary nurse Nicole, who has taken Pretzel under her wing, is determined to secure the necessary funding for Noel to perform life-changing surgery, offering Pretzel the prospect of a future free from pain.
