On 17 February 2022, she was arrested in Russia for carrying under one gram of medicinal hash oil, which had been legally prescribed to her in the US. She was travelling to Russia to play for the Russian women’s basketball team during the WNBA offseason.
Griner’s memoir, “Coming Home,” details her harrowing experience in the Russian criminal justice system, including her time in a Russian penal colony and the chilling prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. It also speaks of her deep love for her wife, Cherelle, and how their bond, along with the support of her family and friends, helped her through this difficult time.
