“This Old House,” now in its 46th season, returns this Thursday with a project that bridges the old and the new. In “Westford: Gutted & Rewired,” the team tackles a renovation that blends antique charm with modern technology. Host Kevin O’Connor oversees the controlled chaos as the crew attends to the delicate task of rewiring an antique chandelier, a process that requires the steady hands of a surgeon and the knowledge of an electrician.
But it’s not all about preserving the past. The episode also features the initial steps of installing a backyard solar panel system, a move that brings the house firmly into the 21st century. And while solar panels may represent the future of energy, sometimes it’s the basics that matter most: The team also tackles the less glamorous but equally important job of installing new fiberglass gutters.
“This Old House” has always been about more than just hammers and nails. It’s about education, about giving viewers the tools and know-how to handle their own home improvement projects. With its dual-project format, the series often explores homes in different parts of the country, providing a peek into a range of architectural styles and the specific problems they present. Tune in to PBS this Thursday, May 8th at 8:00 PM ET for “Westford: Gutted & Rewired.”
