History, as a subject, has its share of predictable tropes: the rise and fall of empires, the clash of ideologies, the occasional plague. But a well-crafted historical documentary can breathe new life into even the most familiar narratives. The History Channel attempts to do just that with its new six-part series on Thomas Jefferson, beginning Monday, February 17, at 8:00 PM.
The opening episode, “A Revolutionary is Born (1743-1773),” chronicles Jefferson’s privileged upbringing and education, tracing the path that led him to become a pivotal figure in the American Revolution. Of course, no exploration of Jefferson is complete without addressing the elephant in the Monticello: his complicated relationship with slavery. The series attempts to present a balanced view of this deeply flawed founding father, acknowledging both his contributions to American democracy and the hypocrisy of his personal life. Subsequent episodes air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Will this series offer groundbreaking revelations about Jefferson? Maybe not. Will it be yet another hagiography, glossing over the uncomfortable parts? One hopes not. The real test will be whether the filmmakers can walkl the tightrope between historical accuracy and engaging storytelling. Check it out Monday on History at 8:00 PM to decide for yourself.
