“Tracker,” CBS’s cat-and-mouse thriller, usually keeps its focus tight on Colter and his unique brand of justice. This week, however, “Shades of Gray” expands the playing field, dragging Colter into a mafia turf war disguised by a surprisingly sweet facade: a cupcake empire.
The case seems simple enough at first: find Matt, the missing son of Ivy Hale, founder of the popular Ivy Bakes chain. But as Colter digs deeper, he discovers that Ivy Bakes isn’t just about sugary treats. It’s a front for money laundering, and Ivy isn’t just a baker; she’s a mob boss trying to go legit. Her son Matt disappeared in the middle of her attempts to become a regular businesswoman.
The plot thickens when a rival mob boss, Lindo, accuses Ivy of stepping on his toes. Suddenly, Colter finds himself navigating a dangerous web of rivalries and hidden agendas. Amidst the chaos, he finds an unlikely ally in Vargas, a member of Lindo’s crew, who happens to have a childhood connection to Matt. Meanwhile, Matt’s controlling mother, Ivy, was displeased with her son’s relationship with his girlfriend, and the woman was eventually found tied up in Ivy’s bathroom with the water running.
Someone tried to make it look like Matt and Vargas had been meeting up, like they were conspiring. Ivy’s cousin, Casey, felt entitled to run the family business and aimed to harm both Ivy and Matt. Colter, providing Vargas with what he needed to save Matt from Casey’s ransom scheme, secures a favor from Ivy should he ever require assistance with the Lindos.
Surprisingly, Elliott remained unaware of Ivy’s mob connections until recently, only discovering Ivy’s intentions to exit the dangerous world after the chaos had subsided.
“Shades of Gray” delivers a satisfying blend of action and intrigue, proving that “Tracker” can handle more complicated storylines without losing its gritty edge. It airs Sundays at 8 PM ET on CBS.
