Joe Lycett, purveyor of finely crafted sarcasm and surprisingly competent travel planning, returns for a new season of Travel Man. This time, he’s dragging comedian David O’Doherty along for a 48-hour whirlwind tour of Málaga, Spain. What could possibly go wrong?
Málaga, known for its beaches and historic sites, will be subjected to the Lycett treatment: a mix of genuine curiosity, dry wit, and a slight air of bewilderment at the sheer volume of tourist attractions. O’Doherty, with his trademark whimsical observations, will no doubt provide a perfect foil to Lycett’s more pointed commentary.
Their itinerary includes a nerve-wracking stroll along the Caminito del Rey, a footpath suspended a dizzying 100 meters above a gorge. Viewers can anticipate some classic Lycett anxiety mixed with O’Doherty’s attempts to lighten the mood. From terrifying heights to the more grounded (but possibly equally terrifying) International Museum of Nativity Scene Art in Mollina, their journey spans the spectrum of human experience. Over 70 nativity scenes and more than 2,000 handmade figures? That’s a lot of baby Jesus.
Of course, no trip to Spain would be complete without some sampling of local beverages. Lycett and O’Doherty will test their palates at Antigua Casa de Guardia, Málaga’s oldest bar. One can only hope they remember to hydrate between glasses of wine and attempts at cubist art, inspired by Málaga’s most famous son, Picasso.
From dolphin spotting in Marbella to assessing Málaga’s overall merits at Colomares Castle, the duo will pack more into 48 hours than most people manage in a week. Join the controlled chaos on Channel 4, Friday, January 10, 2025, at 8:30 PM.
