In the latest episode of Apple TV+’s Trying, titled “Road Trip,” Nikki and Jason, played by Rafe Spall and Esther Smith, find themselves on a path to adoption as they navigate their desire to start a family. With their lives filled with eccentric friends, quirky families, and a fair share of chaos, the couple sets out to prove to the adoption panel that they are ready to take on the responsibilities of parenthood.
In this episode, Jason takes on the task of helping Tyler fit in by starting a junior soccer team. Meanwhile, Nikki, Karen, and Princess embark on a trip to Brighton, where secrets and surprises may await.
Season 4 premiered on May 22, 2024, with a six-year time jump, introducing new conflicts and challenges for the beloved London-based couple, Nikki and Jason.
The season opens with Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as experienced adopters, having built a loving nuclear family with their teenage daughter, Princess (Scarlett Rayner), and her younger brother, Tyler (Cooper Turner). Princess’s desire to connect with her birth mother becomes a central conflict, testing Nikki and Jason’s parenting skills.
The six-year time jump brings some changes to the cast, with older versions of Princess and Tyler being portrayed by Rayner and Turner, respectively. Matilda Flower joins the cast as Stevie, Karen and Scott’s young daughter.
Princess’s yearning for a connection with her birth mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), becomes a focal point of the season, causing insecurities in Nikki, who goes out of her comfort zone to understand the circumstances of her children’s adoption. Meanwhile, Jason works to help Tyler fit in and navigate the challenges of fatherhood.
