Beloved BBC Scotland sitcom Two Doors Down is making a surprise return with a Christmas special, despite the passing of co-creator Simon Carlyle in 2023. The special is being written by Carlyle’s long-time creative partner, Gregor Sharp.
Here’s the Lowdown: Two Doors Down, which follows the lives of a group of neighbours in a Glasgow suburb, was thought to have ended after Carlyle’s death. Sharp initially felt unable to continue the series without him. However, reports indicate that Sharp has now agreed to pen a one-off Christmas episode, which is due to be filmed this Summer.
What This Means Now: Fans of the show, which stars Arabella Weir, Alex Norton, Elaine C Smith, Jonathan Watson, and Doon Mackichan, will get a chance to revisit the characters, potentially for a final farewell. The entire current cast, including Joy McAvoy, Graeme Stevely, Kieran Hodgson, and Jamie Quinn, are reported to be returning.
The Bigger Picture: The decision to create a special, rather than a full series, reportedly relieves some pressure on Sharp. The episode will offer a way to honour Carlyle’s creation and perhaps provide closure for the show’s audience. If successful, it could even pave the way for more episodes in the future. While the BBC hasn’t officially confirmed the special, it’s expected to air on BBC One around Christmas/Hogmanay.
