Oxygen presents a two-part series titled *”The Girl on the Milk Carton,”* airing Sunday, 25 August, at 7 p.m. ET/PT. The series examines the story of Jonelle Matthews, one of the first missing children to have her face featured on dairy product packaging in the 1980s.
Jonelle’s story begins in 1984 when she disappeared from her family home in Greeley, Colorado, five days before Christmas. With the local community shaken and the Greeley police seeking assistance from the FBI, Jonelle’s disappearance sparked a grassroots movement to ensure she wasn’t forgotten. This caught the attention of President Ronald Reagan, who championed the missing children’s national milk carton campaign.
For 35 years, Jonelle’s case remained unsolved. However, in 2019, a grim discovery was made: her remains were found 20 miles from her home, turning a missing person case into a murder investigation. This confirmation of foul play also brought heartache to Jonelle’s family, who had long feared the worst.
The investigation took a turn when Angela Hicks, the former wife of a true-crime enthusiast and Idaho gubernatorial candidate, came forward with suspicions about her then-husband’s behavior. Her story, kept secret for years, finally surfaced when a former classmate of Jonelle’s sister, now a detective on the cold case, pursued the truth. Angela’s testimony played a crucial role in bringing the case to a close.
“The Girl on the Milk Carton” is produced by Wild Dream Films. Stuart Clarke serves as executive producer, with Marcus Plowright as director and showrunner.
