We all have our anxieties. Some fear spiders, some fear public speaking, and some, like young Dylan, fear flying. This week’s Young Dylan, aptly titled “Red Tails,” finds the Wilson family preparing for a trip that necessitates air travel, a prospect that sends Dylan into a spiral of anxiety.
Now, Dylan isn’t usually one to back down from a challenge, whether it’s a rap battle or a prank war with his cousins. But facing his fear of flying? That’s a whole different kind of battlefield. “Red Tails” takes a sensitive approach to this common childhood fear, using Dylan’s dream as a springboard for exploration. Within this dream, Dylan encounters the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, the pioneering African American pilots of World War II. These brave figures become Dylan’s inspiration, their heroic legacy giving him a much-needed dose of courage.
Will Dylan ultimately conquer his fear and board that plane? We’ll have to watch to find out.
