In the second episode of Unforgotten, the team identifies the body found in the chimney flue, and forensics confirm the cause of death as a gunshot wound. DCI Jess James (Sinéad Keenan) and DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) visit the victim’s mother, only to discover a tumultuous relationship between the two.
Back at the station, DS Lingley (Carolina Main) informs the team that the card used to purchase the dress found with the body was stolen from Maggie Bowden. They’re instructed to locate Bowden, investigate other crimes in the area, and speak to the solicitor about who had access to the house. Unbeknownst to Jess, Sunny discreetly arranges for additional plasterboard testing.
In the lab, Leonie Balcombe (Georgia Mackenzie) makes an intriguing discovery and calls for Sunny’s presence. They uncover a gunshot wound, indicating that the victim was shot. The team now faces the task of locating the bullet. Sunny suggests pulling up the floorboards to search for blood traces.
Meanwhile, Balcombe identifies track marks on the victim, suggesting drug use. As Sunny persists with the case, Jess contemplates resignation and even visits her boss’s office with that intention but ultimately backs out.
DC Fran Lingley speaks to a solicitor about the house’s history. They learn that the previous owner had passed away, and the property was tied up with her relatives. There had been a break-in at the house in mid-2016.
At home, Sal (Michelle Bonnard) delivers some personal news to Sunny: she’s pregnant. Sunny is shocked, and although they agree to consider their options, Sal is visibly hurt by Sunny’s less-than-enthusiastic reaction.
The team identifies the woman in the chimney as Precious Falade. After Lingley’s conversation with social services, Jess and Sunny obtain the name and address of Precious’s mother, Ebele (Martina Laird). They deliver the tragic news, and Ebele reveals a complicated relationship with her daughter, admitting that she hadn’t seen Precious since before 2015 and had to cut ties.
When Sunny shows Ebele a photo of the house where Precious was discovered, she denies ever having been there, but Sunny remains unconvinced.
