Universal Basic Guys “Sheet Shock” (FOX, Sunday, December 8, 2024)

Universal Basic Guys

This Sunday, FOX’s Universal Basic Guys offers a potent cocktail of the mundane and the fantastical. In “Sheet Shock,” Mark grapples with the harsh realities of military life (or at least, making a bed), while David finds himself entangled in a veteran’s increasingly unbelievable war stories. The episode’s title, as nonsensical as the show often is, promises at least a sheet-related mishap or two. Let’s unpack the potential for comedic chaos.

Mark, perpetually seeking purpose in a post-automation world, feels the sting of rejection when a Navy recruiter dismisses him. Undeterred, he sets his sights on the Marines, only to discover that even the most elite fighting force requires a certain level of domestic competence – specifically, the ability to create a tightly tucked hospital corner. One can only imagine the comedic contortions Mark will go through as he confronts this unexpectedly formidable foe: a fitted sheet.

Meanwhile, David, in his ongoing quest for literary greatness (or at least, something to do), teams up with a veteran to ghostwrite his memoirs. This partnership, however, takes a turn for the bizarre as the veteran’s recollections veer into the realm of the outlandish, leaving David struggling to discern fact from fiction. Will David’s book become a bestseller, a work of absurdist fiction, or something in between?
