The season premiere of Van der Valk on Masterpiece, titled “Safe in Amsterdam Part 1,” kicks off with a high-stakes situation: two whistleblowers are in police protection before a court hearing that could expose Bibi Franken, a criminal empire matriarch. The tension rises as the first whistleblower is ambushed, leading to the arrival of Van Der Valk and his team as emergency protection.
The case becomes more complex due to the disappearance of team member Eddie and the introduction of Kalie Tenkers, a former romantic partner of Van Der Valk, as the protection officer. The history between Van Der Valk and Kalie adds friction to their collaboration, especially since she is also considered a suspect. Adding to the intrigue, Van Der Valk soon becomes directly involved in the case when he is caught up in an explosion, indicating that Bibi is desperate to prevent the hearing from proceeding.
However, Bibi’s involvement may not be as clear-cut as it seems. In a surprising twist, Bibi approaches Van Der Valk and Lucienne, asserting her innocence and proposing a joint effort to uncover the truth. This leaves Van Der Valk with a difficult choice: whether to form an alliance with Bibi or continue their investigation independently.
