Viaplay is loading up its summer slate with three originals aimed at very different corners of the streaming market—from true crime and Nordic noir to dark family comedy—all with the same clear play: bold local storytelling with international export potential.
First out is Mafia, a six-part Swedish crime drama that lands Thursday, June 19. Shot in Swedish with English subtitles, the series tracks the rise of organized crime in 1990s Sweden, pulling from real events during the fallout of the Yugoslav Wars. Peshang Rad stars as Jakov, a street-level operator turned ruthless strategist, while Katia Winter plays the cop trying to stop him. Episodes drop weekly through July 24.
Two weeks later, Viaplay pivots to one of Sweden’s most controversial criminal cases with Johanna Möller: Sweden’s Most Hated Woman, premiering July 10. The documentary centers on Möller’s conviction for her father’s murder and mother’s attempted killing, and features her speaking publicly for the first time. The series brings in legal analysts to examine the justice system’s handling of the case, framing it as both a psychological profile and judicial postmortem.
Then on August 21, Viaplay shifts tone again with the premiere of In The Name of Love, a four-week run of double episodes from writer-director Bård Breien. The comedy-drama, inspired by Breien’s own life, revolves around a family that built its wealth in the adult film business and collides in chaos during a baptism. Maria Bonnevie, Trond Espen Seim, and Jakob Oftebro lead the ensemble. The series is in Norwegian, with subtitles.
All three projects underscore Viaplay’s continued investment in character-forward originals with sharp points of view—an increasingly critical strategy as the company works to retain local subscribers while expanding its international footprint.
