Nobody’s truly obsessed with vinyl are they. It’s a fun hobby, occasionally sounds nice, provides a talking point for people who can’t discuss anything else. But obsessed? Come on. Anyway, AXS TV’s Vinyl Obsession continues its exploration of this supposed obsession with comedian Dusty Slay and musician Marcus King rummaging through the bins at Nashville’s Grimey’s.
This week’s episode features Slay and King, offering a peek into their musical tastes, supposedly revealing their top five records. Whether those top fives are truly reflective of their actual listening habits or carefully curated to project a certain image, well, that’s for viewers to decide. Let’s face it, claiming Frampton Comes Alive! is your all-time favorite screams, “I own an ironic trucker hat.”
The episode looks to blend Slay’s comedic sensibilities with King’s country-rock background, hopefully resulting in a mix of witty banter and genuine musical discussion. Will they discover hidden gems? Probably not. Will they wax poetic about the “warmth” of analog sound? Almost certainly. Will they pretend to know the difference between a first pressing and a reissue? We’ll see.
Vinyl Obsession offers a format that’s simultaneously low-stakes and potentially insightful. At its best, it provides a glimpse into an artist’s influences, offering a window into their creative DNA. At its worst, it’s a glorified record store commercial. This episode, the seventh of the second season, airs Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 10:30 p.m. ET/9:30 p.m. CT on AXS TV.
