From the glitz and glamour of “Toddlers & Tiaras” to the family-focused reality show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo, has spent much of her life in front of the camera. Now, Lifetime takes a fresh look at her story in “I Was Honey Boo Boo,” a biopic premiering this Saturday that features Alana narrating her own life.
The film takes viewers behind the scenes, revealing the stark contrast between Alana’s often boisterous, confident on-screen persona and the more complicated reality she faced off-camera. From harsh public criticism to family turmoil, the biopic explores the challenges of growing up under the unrelenting gaze of reality TV fame.
A key relationship examined in the film is Alana’s strained connection with her mother, Mama June, played here by Chelsea Larkin. Georgia Small takes on the role of Pumpkin. “I Was Honey Boo Boo” offers a chance for Alana to tell her story, on her terms.
“I Was Honey Boo Boo” premieres this Saturday, May 17 at 8:00 PM ET on Lifetime.
