Western Australia-based Prospero Productions is continuing its output of factual television, announcing new series set to air on Nine and Seven later this year, alongside a currently screening program.
Here’s the Lowdown: Hunting Outback Gold, scheduled for Nine, follows a team searching for a legendary gold reef, drawing inspiration from Harold Lasseter’s ill-fated 1930s quest. Also in the works is a second season of Outback Crystal Hunters for Seven, which follows seven teams across Australia seeking rare crystals after Season 1 featured a record 21-tonne amethyst find. Currently airing on Nine is West Coast Cops, narrated by Lisa McCune, which tracks former UK officers adapting to policing in WA.
What This Means Now: These commissions highlight Prospero Productions’ strength in developing factual content rooted in Australian landscapes and stories, from historical quests to modern-day professions and treasure hunting. The company is successfully securing commissions across major Australian networks.
The Bigger Picture: All three productions receive principal funding support from Screenwest and Lotterywest, indicating continued investment in WA-based factual programming. The shows also have international distribution partners (DCD Rights, Sphere Abacus, Bossa Nova Media), suggesting potential for global reach. Screenwest’s Melissa Hayward praised Prospero’s ability to craft engaging human stories from real-life situations.
