Washington Black Key Art

Hulu has set a premiere date for its upcoming historical limited series Washington Black, with all eight episodes dropping on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The show will stream on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally.

Sterling K. Brown headlines the project and also serves as executive producer. Based on the acclaimed novel by Esi Edugyan, the series follows George Washington “Wash” Black, an eleven-year-old boy who escapes slavery and finds himself thrust into a globe-spanning journey of survival, self-definition, and discovery.

Ernest Kingsley Jr. stars as Wash, with a supporting cast that includes Rupert Graves, Iola Evans, Edward Bluemel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Eddie Karanja, and Tom Ellis.

Set in the 19th century, the story begins on a sugar plantation in Barbados, where a violent incident forces Wash to flee. What follows is a visually ambitious and emotionally charged series that blends historical detail with imaginative adventure, tracking Wash’s evolution as he tackles a dangerous world with curiosity and intelligence as his guides.

Brown executive produces alongside Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Kimberly Ann Harrison, who also serve as showrunners. Other EPs include Anthony Hemingway, The Gotham Group, and Edugyan herself, with 20th Television producing in association with Indian Meadows Productions.

The trailer, released this week, teases sweeping landscapes and a tone that moves between urgency and wonder. It positions Washington Black as a prestige summer release, with strong appeal for fans of literary adaptations, period drama, and character-led storytelling.
