Waterloo Road Series 3 Premieres January 2 on BBC One

Waterloo Road

Waterloo Road, the smash hit school drama that has been on BBC One since its relaunch at the start of this year, will return for its third series on Tuesday, January 2. The eight-part series will premiere weekly at 8 p.m. on BBC One and be accessible as a complete boxset on BBC iPlayer beginning at 6 a.m.

Produced and set in Greater Manchester, Waterloo Road made a triumphant return to BBC One earlier this year. Two series in 2023 helped propel the show to the top of iPlayer’s ratings for viewers under the age of 35.

The new series will maintain Waterloo Road’s signature blend of incisive writing, warmth, and humour while continuing to examine real-life issues impacting today’s students, families, and school personnel.

The delicate equilibrium of peace and harmony is once again precariously balanced as a group of persistently unmotivated students makes their way to Waterloo Road. Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin), the head teacher, and her staff face an impending doom unless they succeed.

Libby is anything but a lovable student when she unexpectedly returns to Manchester to live with her dad, Neil Guthrie (Neil Fitzmaurice), who happens to be the head of history at her school. Although first-day newcomer “Schuey” causes quite a commotion, there may be more going on with this mischievous student than meets the eye as he begins to cause mayhem for one particular instructor.

The influence of Andrew Treneman (Jamie Glover) on Kim persists, and for some members of the faculty, the boundaries between their personal and professional lives start to melt.

Kelly-Jo and Dean’s relationship is put to the ultimate test while Preston (Noah Valentine) tries to acclimatise to school life.

Vincent Jerome (as Lindon King), Jo Coffey (as Wendy Whitwell), Shauna Shim (as Valerie Chambers), and James Baxter (as Joe Casey) are all returning as teaching staff for the new series of Waterloo Road. The cast includes Coral Walker as Rachel Leskovac, Amy Spratt as Katherine Pearce, Mike Rutherford as Ryan Clayton, and Jamilah Omar as Sonia Ibrahim.

Among the returning students are Kai Sharif as Adam Ali, Shola Aku as ChiChi Ulebor, Zayne Jackson as Inathi Rozani, Noel McManus as Liam Scholes, Kaz Williams as Lucy Eleanor Begg, Samia Choudhry as Priyasasha Kumari, Tonya Walters as Summer Violet Bird, and Dwayne “The Rock” Jackson as Thapelo Ray.

Along with Vicky Thomas, Mickey Jones, and Paulette Randall, Angela Griffin makes her directing debut with this series. Lindsay Williams is the show’s producer. Davey Jones, Jayshree Patel, Natalie Mitchell, Jess Barnes, Gareth McLean, Julia Kent, Rebekah Harrison, and Neil Jones write the new series.

Cameron Roach, Executive Producer of Waterloo Road and Founder of Rope Ladder Fiction, says: “Waterloo Road arrives back on our screen in the New Year, with a screech of burning rubber, and we don’t let our foot off the gas. We’re incredibly proud of the energy and passion this show delivers on and offscreen, Waterloo Road not only delivers phenomenal numbers on BBC iPlayer, specifically for a young audience, but we really value the number of trainees that have now worked on, and graduated from the show, across all craft disciplines. The writing and directing teams have also been buoyed by new talent to the show, including the brilliant Angela Griffin who directs episodes 5 and 6. We’re so grateful to all cast and crew for their continued commitment to this landmark BBC brand.”

Two more Waterloo Road seasons are in production in Greater Manchester, with airdates to be announced later. They will both air on BBC One and iPlayer.

Waterloo Road has a history of bringing up new talent in front of and behind the camera. They still hold open casting calls at local schools and youth groups, and they provide workshops and production training programmes to newbies, all in an effort to improve the North of England’s drama production abilities. Starting in 2022, 28 trainees have been placed on Waterloo Road for six months in various departments, such as costume, art direction, post-production, camera, and sound, in order to obtain entry-level, paid jobs in the industry.

Wall to Wall North and Rope Ladder Fiction collaborated on Waterloo Road, a BBC One and iPlayer co-production. The BBC’s Gaynor Holmes and Jo McClellan are executive producers, while Wall to Wall’s Leanne Klein and Rope Ladder Fiction’s Cameron Roach are also involved.
