We’re Here Season 4 Premiere, April 26, 2024, HBO, “Tennessee, Part 1”

HBO’s acclaimed docuseries We’re Here returns for its fourth season, shining a light on the power of drag to spread love and connection in small-town America. The season premiere, “Tennessee, Part 1,” takes viewers to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has cast a shadow over the community.

In this episode, renowned drag queens Sasha Velour, Priyanka, and Jaida Essence Hall embark on a mission to empower everyday people through the art of drag. They are joined by Latrice Royale, who completes the dynamic quartet of hosts. Together, they navigate a challenging landscape marked by attempts to ban Pride celebrations and drag performances on public property.

The queens encounter a community grappling with fear and uncertainty due to a community decency ordinance that grants police officers the power to deem certain behaviors inappropriate. With drag deemed a danger to children, the performers and participants risk legal repercussions and public scrutiny by taking part in the show.

Despite the obstacles, the queens forge ahead, mentoring two local residents, Maleeka and Bradford, as their “drag children.” Maleeka, a transgender woman, seeks to embrace her true self and confront unanswered questions from her past. Bradford, a musician and father to queer and trans children, strives to become a better ally to his family.

The episode captures the queens’ journey as they help their mentees face their fears and find the courage to express themselves. Through their mentorship, the queens not only empower Maleeka and Bradford but also inspire the entire community to stand up for love and acceptance.
