BBC One’s “Who Do You Think You Are?” returns this Tuesday with a deeply personal journey into the family history of actor Andrew Garfield. The episode traces Garfield’s paternal Jewish roots back to Poland, uncovering the circumstances that led his ancestors to leave their homeland.
The investigation reveals a poignant story of survival as Garfield learns that his great-great-grandmother managed to escape the horrors of the Holocaust by joining her daughter in Brazil. The episode also explores his great-grandmother’s family, who emigrated to Los Angeles, adapting to their new life by anglicizing their surname to Cooper.
Garfield’s quest for knowledge uncovers difficult truths about the pogroms in Poland that forced his great-grandfather to emigrate, as well as the devastating loss of family members during the Holocaust. On a brighter note, he also discovers a relative on his mother’s side who served as a member of the Monuments Men, the group tasked with recovering stolen art during World War II.
“Who Do You Think You Are?” with Andrew Garfield airs Tuesday, 22 April at 9:00 PM on BBC One.
