Will Trent’s back. After last season’s…let’s call it a “tumultuous” finale, Agent Trent apparently decided a little getaway was in order. Turns out, getting away from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is harder than dodging a bad barbecue joint in Macon. Two off-duty cops get winged, and suddenly, everybody’s ringing Trent’s phone like he’s the only pest control guy in the state.
This season premiere, “I’m a Guest Here,” finds our dyslexic, sharp-dressed GBI agent dragged back into the fray whether he likes it or not. And, from the looks of it, he really doesn’t. Not only does he have a fresh case to crack, but he also has a friend in need of some serious exoneration. Naturally, things aren’t as simple as they appear. Rivalries, corruption – it’s all standard operating procedure in the world of Will Trent.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s books, “Will Trent” manages to be both gritty and occasionally absurd, thanks to the unflappable performance of Ramón Rodríguez as the titular character. He tackles dyslexia, a complicated past, and Atlanta traffic with the same weary determination. The supporting cast, including Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin, Sonja Sohn, and Gina Rodriguez, provides a reliable mix of competence and dysfunction, ensuring that Trent’s never too far from a good eye-roll or a much-needed backup. “I’m a Guest Here” kicks off what looks to be another twisty season. Now, if only someone could get Trent a decent vacation.
“Will Trent” airs Tuesdays from January 7 at 8/7c on ABC.
