“Will Trent,” ABC’s moody crime drama, has carved out a nice little niche for itself. It’s not quite as dark as “Bosch,” not quite as quirky as, well, everything on NBC, but it has a solid, dependable grimness that I appreciate. This week, a tropical storm adds an extra wrinkle to the usual procedural formula.
“Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein” finds the APD and GBI joining forces to clear the name of a supposedly innocent man. Of course, nothing is ever that simple in the world of television crime-solving. As the investigation unfolds (amidst the downpour, I presume), shocking secrets will be unearthed.
Will the storm serve as a mere backdrop, or will it play a more integral role in the narrative? Will the killer be lurking closer than anyone suspects? Given the title, I’m slightly worried this might veer into “campy horror” territory, but hopefully, the show will stick to its strengths: gritty realism, sharp dialogue, and Ramón Rodríguez’s perpetually furrowed brow.
“Will Trent” airs Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 8:00 PM on ABC.
