What if your deepest desire…became someone else’s reality? That’s the whimsical, if slightly terrifying, premise of Hallmark’s latest offering, “The Wish Swap.” When Casey (Emily Tennant) and Henry (Jake Foy) make birthday wishes at the exact same moment, a cosmic comedy of errors ensues, resulting in a full-blown wish swap. Henry gets the career boost Casey craved, while Casey finds herself unexpectedly entangled in Henry’s personal life.
This sort of high-concept switcheroo is familiar territory for Hallmark, but what separates “The Wish Swap” is the potential for genuine character development amidst the inevitable romantic entanglements. Will Casey and Henry learn to appreciate their own lives, even with the occasional hiccup? Or will they spend the entire movie pining for the alternate realities they briefly glimpsed? One thing’s for sure: with a title like “The Wish Swap,” expect some contrived situations and a hefty dose of feel-good resolution.
