Helen Skelton and Dan Walker embark on the next leg of their walking adventure, this time exploring the majestic North York Moors. Known for its expansive heather moorland, historic landmarks, and culinary delights, the region features a wealth of discoveries.
The journey begins in the quaint village of Hawnby, famously traversed by Mary, Queen of Scots, on her fateful final journey. From the summit of Hawnby Hill, the pair takes in breathtaking views before making their way to the charming cobbled market town of Helmsley.
On the outskirts of town, a verdant surprise awaits as they stumble upon Helmsley Walled Gardens, where dedicated volunteers tend to a horticultural haven. Helen and Dan roll up their sleeves to join in, relishing the therapeutic effects of gardening.
The exploration of Yorkshire’s gastronomic treats continues as Dan visits the Michelin-starred The Star Inn in a nearby village, while Helen opts for a small bakery in the heart of the market town, each uncovering unique culinary delights.
The duo’s taste buds are further tantalised when they create Yorkshire-inspired cocktails at a hidden bar owned by Sicilian mixologist Salvatore. While Helen saddles up for a pony trek across the stunning moors, Dan looks into the past at Rievaulx Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery, guided by the knowledgeable Gemma Jones.
Their adventure culminates at Sutton Bank on the Hambleton Hills, where they soak up panoramic views of the Vale of York and conclude their journey with a picnic at the highest point of the breathtaking National Park.
