In the third and final episode British History’s Biggest Fibs, airing on Thursday 9 February 2017 at 9.00pm on BBC Four, Lucy explores how the British Government enacted a coup to take over the rule of India from the huge and influential Honourable East India Company.

The leaders of the East India Company were presented as the villains, while Queen Victoria was elevated to the role of wise and benevolent Empress. The East India Company was swept aside for disrespecting India’s religions and raiding its riches.

Under the rule of Queen Victoria, Britain claimed that it would now bestow the benefits of Empire: Christianity, education and progress.
