The third series of period crime drama Grantchester continues with the second episode airing on Sunday 30 April at 9.00pm on ITV.
A village cricket match between Grantchester and Whittlesford brings the community together. Sidney and Geordie form a handsome batting partnership as they swat away everything the Whittlesford bowlers can throw at them. Cricket captain Geoff Towler (Peter Davison) is taking the match far more seriously than anyone else.
When Grantchester’s young Pakistani batsman Zafar Ali (Dinesh Sundran) takes to the field, Geoff is quick to side with the Whittlesford team over calls of LBW, and Geoff decides to forfeit the match rather than take his own batsman’s word. After the match, cricketers and spectators are enjoying the beer and buffet when one of the cricketers keels over, and before long more people go down clutching their stomachs.
Later, at the village meeting, Geordie explains to Sidney that they may have suffered mild arsenic poisoning. The common factor appears to be the beer. Geoff takes Geordie to one side and asks him to turn a blind eye to the ‘vintage bitter’ arrangement he has with the local brewery, before forcing Geordie into a mason-like handshake. Sidney and Geordie make their way to Zafar and his brother Munir’s house, but when they arrive, Zafar is lying dead. It seems Zafar was killed by a more severe version of the arsenic poisoning that everyone else suffered. But was Zafar’s death accidental, or did someone poison him deliberately?
Grantchester Season 3 Episode 2 airs on Sunday 30 April 2017 at 9.00pm on ITV.
