Rowan Atkinson stars as Chief Inspector Maigret in this drama based on the novels of author Georges Simenon and set in 1950s Paris. Late one night, drunken Arlette (Olivia Vinall), a beguiling showgirl from a seedy club in Montmartre, arrives at the police headquarters claiming to to have overheard two men discussing the murder of a countess. She is overcome with tiredness, and insists on lying down to sleep.
When she awakes, she screams the name ‘Oscar’. When Maigret tries to dig a little deeper, she rushes from the building. The next day, Arlette is found strangled in her apartment. They discover that Arlette’s identity papers have been forged and Maigret suspects that she had a reason to hide her past.
Maigret feels annoyed at himself for not appreciating the depth of Arlette’s problems, and vows to catch the killer. However, he is interrupted by the news that a countess (Nicola Sloane) has been found dead – killed in a similar manner to Arlette.
It is apparent that the countess is addicted to morphine and Maigret discovers her husband had committed suicide. Her only visitors are her doctor and a pathetic rent boy. Maigret becomes obsessed with discovering the connection between the two women, and why they have been targeted by the same killer.
Also starring Lucy Cohu, Shaun Dingwall, Douglas Hodge and Lorraine Ashbourne.
