Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes are back as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in this one-off Christmas special taking a coveted prime Christmas Day spot too.
As Christmas approaches, Victoria is uncharacteristically melancholy. She is feeling bereft without her confidant Baroness Lehzen, and the festive season reminds her of her lonely childhood at Kensington.
In contrast, Albert is gripped by an obsession with staging the perfect family Christmas, and ruffles feathers as he transforms the palace into a magical festive wonderland. Victoria is furious when she discovers that he has invited two very unwelcome guests – meddling uncle Leopold (Alex Jennings) and her mother the Duchess of Kent (Catherine Flemming).
The conflict between Albert and Victoria continues when Captain Forbes (Ben Lamb) arrives with a gift for the Queen – a young African princess called Sarah (Zaris-Angel Hator). Victoria does not understand Albert’s objections, and lavishes her with attention. Christmas at the palace brings historic animosities to the surface, helps new romances blossom and means that sacrifices have to be made.
However, a terrifying accident on the frozen lake calls Victoria and Albert’s priorities into question. Can they both put their past behind them, and give their own children the Christmas that they never had?
Victoria Christmas Special airs Monday 25 December 2017 from 9.00pm on ITV.
