This series has exclusive access to Britain’s biggest warship, HMS Ocean, and her crew, on a sensitive seven-month active deployment to the Middle East, where she’ll be the first British warship to take command of a US Naval task force. After three weeks at sea, HMS Ocean heads into troubled waters: past Egypt, through the Suez Canal and into an active war zone in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, where a US warship was recently targeted.
A third of Ocean’s crew are new recruits; how will they face up to the dangers ahead? Charismatic second-in-command Nick Wood has 30 years of experience at sea; this is his last active deployment, and he’s determined that his first-timers will learn how to defend themselves and their ship. En route to the Suez Canal, the ship stops in Alexandria for a spot of diplomacy. Although Egypt is under military rule, it’s still a key military ally in the Middle East, and for the first time in eight years the Royal Navy – via Ocean – welcomes senior members of the Egyptian military to the ship’s aircraft hangar for a cocktail party. In charge is Chief Steward Evrist Farmboy Tempro, a Rastafarian from St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean, who joined the Navy over ten years ago. As an old hand, he’s stoic in the face of the dangers ahead: ‘if your time is up, it’s up, and I’d prefer to go out with a bang and fighting for a worthy cause’.
