Ray Winstone was born February 1957 in Hackney, London. His parents were greengrocers. He started boxing at the age of twelve and fought twice for England. At 18 Ray studied acting at London’s Corona School. He was expelled for vandalising the headmistress’s car. TV god Alan Clarke cast him in borstal drama Scum because he liked the way he walked.
After the BBC shelved the film for being too controversial, a disillusioned Winstone quit acting, returning only when the film was remade for cinema. Winstone spent most of the 80s in TV wilderness, with roles including Will Scarlet in Robin of Sherwood. A 90s comeback culminated in his eviscerating performance as a wife-beater in Gary Oldman’s Nil By Mouth
