Crimson Field, The (BBC-1 2014, Suranne Jones, Oona Chaplin)

Period medical drama series The Crimson Field was set during world war one. Suffragette nurse Sister Joan Livesly is posted to the frontline and soon finds herself at odds with her superiors over her modern approach. Meanwhile volunteer Kitty Trevelyan very quickly has her eyes opened to the brutal and bloody realities of treating soldiers wounded in the trenches.

Impressive production values and a cracking cast make for an highly watchable series. Channels into our current love for all things period mixing the hospital drama of Call The Midwife and the class issues of Downton Abbey and also tying in nicely with the 100th anniversary of World War One.
