Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica (MTV 2003-2005, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey)

Newlyweds was a fly-on-the-wall series following the frank and fascinating home life of American pop stars Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. In the opening episode, the newlyweds move in together for the first time and quickly realise that married life is not that easy. Neat freak Nick discovers that his beautiful bride is actually a slob? And Jessica realises that leaving her dirty clothes in a pile in the foyer won’t result in them getting clean?

By the time of the second season there seemed to be some real growth in the relationship between the pair. Now married a year the couple seem more comfortable within themselves in relation to each other but are finding it difficult to deal with the outside forces that keep them in the spotlight, from the ever present paparazzi to the sometimes over eager manager (who just happens to be Jessica’s father). You do get the feeling whilst watching the episodes that Jessica must be a really good actress, surely no one could be that disingenuous but then again…

The key theme of most episodes seemed to be the struggle of the two of them actually finding the time to be together, what with concerts, endless photo shoots and the whole business of being a ‘star couple’, some of the best moments come from when the pair do find the time to just be themselves and be together, such as a trip to the Kentucky Derby and spending Christmas with their families. You are often left with the impression that both Jessica and Nick are relatively normal and were they not famous would be content to live out the suburban dream.

The happiness was short lived though. The couple filed for divorce in December 2005.
