Spring And Autumn (ITV Sitcom, Jimmy Jewel)
In sitcom Spring and Autumn young teenager Charlie Harris (Charlie Hawkins) befriends cantankerous old age pensioner Tommy Butler (Jimmy Jewel).
The opening episode set the scene: Tommy resents change and resists the move from the slums until the bricks start falling around his ears. He is completely lost at his daughter’s home, having left all his friends behind. As this new series opens, he looks around for a new one and, characteristically, chooses one sixty years younger than himself.
A pilot edition was broadcast in 1972 with a slightly different cast. Season one was written by Vince Powell and Harry Driver but after Driver’s death Powell continued solo. The series ran for four seasons and on 25 December 1973 the cast also appeared in a short segment for that years All Star Comedy Carnival.
The show was a big hit with viewers, season 2 topped the JICTAR ratings with 7.25 million homes tuning in and the show managing to knock the mighty Coronation Street off the top spot for a while.
