Sunday Night Theatre (ITV 1972-1974)

Published

on

Anthology series of single plays Sunday Night Theatre was a continuation of Saturday Night Theatre just moved to a different day. Towards the end of SNT quite a few ITV regions had begun broadcasting the plays on Sunday nights anyway.

Again there is no link between any of the productions, which were contributed by most of the ITV regions, most were originals for TV but there was the odd book or theatre adaptation (such as Anna of the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett – 28 Feb 1971, Arms and the Man from the George Bernard Shaw play – 4 Apr 1971 and even Richard Chamberlain starring in Hamlet – 8 Aug 1971).

Lots of prominent names contributed scripts including Dennis Potter (the brilliant Paper Roses – 16 Jun 1971), John Osborne (The Hotel in Amsterdam – 14 Mar 1971), After a Lifetime by Neville Smith (18 Jul 1971), John Hopkins, Arthur Hopcraft, Jack Rosenthal (his legendary Another Sunday and Sweet F.A. aired 9 Jan 1972), Jeremy Paul and David Mercer with An Afternoon at the Festival (6 May 1973).

As with Saturday Night Theatre the series offered roles to most of the cream of British acting talent working at the time.

Bryan Pringle was the star of the first play Big Soft Nellie (21 Feb 1971) and Trevor Howard starred in the final production Catholics ( 14 Apr 1974 which was also given a prestigious TV Times cover to mark the occasion) in between there were roles for the likes of Paul Scofield, Bill Maynard, Michael Craig, George C. Scott, Helen Mirren, Richard Chamberlain, John Hurt, Michael Jayston, Julia Foster, John Alderton, Richard Johnson and Nigel Davenport to name a few.
