Stephen Mulhern narrates two-part series The Saturday Night Story which celebrates some of the most popular television moments from Saturday night TV.
Featuring classic archive footage and interviews with the biggest names in entertainment, the documentaries tell the stories behind the shows that captivated the nation and turned their stars into household names.
In the first show Henry Kelly and Matthew Kelly are reunited in the studio where they shot to fame in the 1980s with Game for a Laugh. The show recalls how dancing evolved on Saturday nights, from supporting act status to becoming the main draw with Strictly Come Dancing. Former judge Arlene Phillips recalls the reaction to the very first show in 2004, while 2007’s winner Alesha Dixon describes the magical but scary world she entered as a contestant.
Candid Camera, which first hit our screens in the 1960s, was the beginning of the hidden camera phenomenon. From Beadle’s About to Noel’s Gotchas and Ant & Dec Undercover, the show celebrates the best ever pranks played on both the public and celebrities. Ulrika Jonsson returns to Birmingham to reunite the Gladiators, including Wolf and Jet, at the venue where they attracted audiences of millions around the country during the 90s.
Also featured are interviews with the stars of Saturday night TV past and present, including Ant & Dec, Jonathan Ross, Bruce Forsyth, Matthew Kelly, Amanda Holden and Vernon Kay.
