BOSTON PUBLIC

Fox / x60 minute episodes / 2000-2004

Creator/Executive Producer: David E. Kelley

Drama series that depicted students’ anxieties and teachers’ frustrations in a Boston high school. As the first season progressed, the series’s promise was fulfilled in episodes that displayed humanity, integrity, energy and sincerity. But season two saw changes. First of all, the series lost two of its most dynamic and endearing characters: Lauren Davis, the vulnerable yet feisty social studies teacher played by Jessalyn Gilsig; and Harry Senate, the volatile, cocky geology instructor portrayed by Nicky Katt. Their chemistry was a valuable asset that was sorely missed. Second, the storylines shifted from normal to bizarre, most notably the amorous relationship between stern vice-principal Scott Guber (Anthony Heald) and a driven mother (Kathy Baker) who was abused by her emotionally disturbed son. But what really didn’t help Public was its move in season four to Fridays at 9 pm/ET. Think about it. A show aimed at teens airing on a non-school night when its target audience is no doubt out on the town. The final season included contemporary issues such as drug and birth-control policies; the U.S. involvement in Iraq; First Amendment issues; student rights; and prejudice. In addition, there were some superb performances by guest stars. Dennis Miller stretched his acting muscles as an arrogant securities-fraud felon, teaching math at Winslow in lieu of serving prison time and getting a lesson in compassion while putting in time on a teen hotline. Sean Young was very convincing as a competitive mom swept up in her daughter’s cheerleading rivalry, and Sherilyn Fenn equally so as a flighty divorcee.

With:- CHI McBRIDE as Steven Harper / ANTHONY HEALD as Scott Guber / LORETTA DEVINE as Marla Hendricks / SHARON LEAL as Marilyn Sudor / JERI RYAN as Ronnie Cooke / MICHAEL RAPAPORT as Danny Hanson / NATALIA BARON as Carmen Torres(2003 – 2004) / JESSALYN GILSIG as Lauren Davis (2000-2002) / NICKY KATT as Harry Senate (2000 – 2002) / KATHY BAKER as Meredith Peters (2001 – 2002)
