Wednesday Play, The (BBC 1964-1970, Tony Garnett, Ken Loach)

Highly influential BBC1 ‘umbrella title’ for new plays by up and coming writers. Many great names made their mark with plays broadcast under the Wednesday Play banner including Dennis Potter, Jeremy Sandford (Cathy Come Home), Ken Loach and many more. The series eventually made way for the Play For Today strand during the seventies.

At the time it was the BBC’s major home for any writer who was thinking and modernist and at times downright revolutionary – especially with the likes of Cathy Come Home and Up The Junction, offering up material the content of which had never been seen on television before.
