Aquarius (ITV 1970-1977, Humphrey Burton, Russell Harty)
Aquarius was ITV’s flagship arts programme until The South Bank Show came along, beginning in 1970 as a fortnightly show was presented (and edited) by Humphrey Burton who had performed a similar role on Monitor. In 1971 the show went to a weekly appearance.
The programme’s brief was not just on the new or trendy but tried to stay fresh, avoiding that trap of thinking that anything arts related has to be boring. Sometimes the show would follow a magazine format, sometimes there would just be on topic per show, sometimes two or three.
Peter Hall (who was profiled on one of the earliest shows on Friday 13 March 1971) succeeded Humphrey Burton as host in 1975, Russell Harty was involved in the series as interviewer and host (and was also associate producer).
