Period drama serial A Dinner of Herbs was based on the novel by Catherine Cookson and took us to 19th century Northumberland where 11 year old Roddy Greenbank (after the death of his father) finds himself living with the ageing Kate Makepeace along with a pair of other orphans Mary Ellen Lee and Hal Royston, years later when all are grown, events conspire to test their friendship to its very limits.
